What Will Volunteers Do?

SOCA coaches are matched to soccer teams of ages 8-18. It is helpful to have a background in soccer, but not required. Coaches are usually paired in twos or threes (so you and a friend might be interested in coaching a team together).

When?

A one-hour practice takes place weekly as scheduled by the coaches, and games are every Saturday lasting about 8 weeks.

SOCA: Hot Shots

What Will Volunteers Do?

Volunteers for this program will coach their own team of about ten children. Coaches are often partnered up to work together with one team. The children can be anywhere from 4 to 6 years of age. As coaches, the volunteers will run practice drills such as red light, green light or sharks and minnows for the first 30 minutes. Then for the last 30 minutes, the teams play against one another. This is a fun way to get involved in the community, teach children the basic skills of soccer, and share your love for the sport.

When?

Volunteering happens once a week, on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 10:00.

YMCA Basketball

What Will Volunteers Do?

Volunteers will serve as a mix of head coaches and assistant coaches. It is helpful to sign up with a friend and work in pairs. This is a low-pressure atmostphere and the emphasis should be placed on learning instead of winning.  25-30 Volunteers needed.

When?

Program Starts: 2nd week of November (11/12/13)
Program Ends: 3rd week of February (2/18/14)
Training Session: 2nd week of October
Practice will happen once a week for 1-2 hours and games will be on Saturdays.

Girls on the Run

What Will Volunteers Do?

The Assistant Coach is a volunteer position that assists the Head Coach(s) at a Girls on the Run program site. The position entails approximately 1.5-3 hours per week for 12 weeks. The club meets after school (3-4:30) twice a week in the fall and participates in a 5K in Lynchburg at the end of the season. Along with running with the girls, one of the main goals is to be a positive and encouraging role model as these Elementary school aged children learn to run!

When?

After school from 3-4:30pm.

When?

Practices will be held 1-2 times per week. Games are schedule on weekends in the Fall until November, but will never conflict with U.Va. Football Games.

YMCA Lacrosse

What Will Volunteers Do?

Volunteers will be placed in groups of twos and threes and will instruct local youth on the fundamentals of lacrosse. Weekly practices will consist of a fundamentals clinic and a scrimmage.

YMCA Rookie Soccer

What Will Volunteers Do?

Coach 3-8 year olds once a week on Saturdays for one or two hours at a local elementary school. Dependable volunteers are needed with experience of the game and knowledge of drills. This program is low key and a lot of fun. It would not be possible without UVa volunteers and the YMCA is very appreciative. Come join YMCA Rookie Soccer!

When?

Rookie Soccer coaches on Saturdays. There are multiple one hour sessions, but during most seasons the times range from 9am-1pm.

Swimming

What Will Volunteers Do?

Volunteers help out the 3 or 4 professional, paid coaches at the pool. There are two practices that go on at that time, the 8 & unders and the Junior 1s (10/11 yr. olds) and either run the practices in individual lanes, or correct kids' strokes throughout the practice.

When?

Volunteering happens Monday-Friday from 4:30-5:45.
