CASH stands for Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope. Our volunteers provide free tax preparation service to benefit low and moderate-income, elderly, and disabled families. CASH is a program sponsored by the IRS' Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program which was established more than 40 years ago and has since become nationally-renowned. Many low and moderate-income working families in the Charlottesville community take advantage of CASH every year by claiming their EITC (Earned Income Tax Credit) yet many more can still benefit. EITC is one of the largest anti-poverty tools in the US yet 25% of those eligible for it do not claim their refund because they fail to properly complete their tax return. This payroll tax refund brings the average low and moderate-income working families a $1,700 refund but some can receive as much as $4,000. Put another way: The refund equals a 36% or $1.92 per hour pay increase! With your help, the average family can receive a refund of $1700! Last year, our program alone brought over a million dollars in refunds to the Charlottesville community.

What will the volunteers do?

In the Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope (CASH) program, prospective volunteers attend training sessions in the fall semester where they learn about tax laws and tax preparation. We teach you everything you need to know and prior tax knowledge is not necessary. In the spring semester, trained and IRS certified  volunteers provide free tax preparation to low-income individuals and families in the Charlottesville community.

When?

Training occurs on 4 two hour Sunday sessions throughout the Fall semester. Volunteers admitted into the program are expected to attend all training sessions. Spring semester students volunteer weekly for a shift of their choice.
