CASH (Creating Assets, Savings & Hope) is a volunteer tax preparation organization that trains students as VITAs (Volunteer Income Tax Assistants). Our volunteers aim to provide free tax preparation services to low-income families and individuals in the Charlottesville community. Last year, in partnership with United Way, CASH volunteers helped file over 2,400 returns resulting in a direct economic impact of $4 million to the Charlottesville community. Since 2007, the work CASH volunteers have accomplished has resulted in over $29 million of direct economic impact to the Charlottesville community.
 

What will volunteers do?

Prospective volunteers will attend tax law and tax preparation training sessions throughout the Fall semester. Volunteers will be taught all the necessary skills needed - absolutely no prior tax experience is necessary. At the end of the Fall semester, volunteers will take an IRS-mandated certification exam and become IRS-certified as VITAs (Volunteer Income Tax Assistants). During the Spring semester, our volunteers will be staffed on teams and work at local sites around the area to provide free tax filing services to clients from the community.


When DO I VOLUNTEER?

CASH is a year-long commitment. There will be five 2-hour training sessions during the Fall semester. Volunteers are expected to attend all training sessions; however multiple training sessions will be held each week of training in order to accommodate volunteer schedules. Training dates are based on the schedules of the volunteer team, but are generally biweekly with options to attend trainings on weeknights or weekend afternoons. During the Spring semester, students will volunteer weekly with their teams for a chosen shift, beginning in February and ending on April 15th.

CASH strives to provide a well-rounded experience for its volunteers and clients alike. Not only do CASH volunteers receive valuable training to obtain their IRS-certification, but they also have the opportunity to personally impact and interact with individuals in a tangible way. The work of the average volunteer personally results in approximately $60,000 of direct economic impact to the community every tax season. This money is critical to our clients’ financial situations and is often used to pay for bills, groceries, and even rent.


How can I get involved?

Volunteers for CASH are selected via a competitive application and screening process. Among all other things, we look for a strong commitment to the program and enthusiasm to help the community. We do not require tax experience of any kind. The deadline to submit the form is Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at 11:59PM. After you submit the form, the Head Program Director will inform you whether or not you have been selected by mid-September.
