Madison House is one of the largest student-run community service organizations in the nation inspiring service among college students. Each year, approximately 3,300 students volunteer on a weekly basis in the community and 50 percent of the student body at U.Va. will volunteer at least once during their four years at the University.

Madison House programs are led under the direction of 19 Head Program Directors and 180 site/task specific Program Directors. Madison House student leadership embraces the philosophy of volunteer service and do not receive academic credit or pay for their services. These leaders participate in student and staff-run volunteer management and leadership development trainings. These student leaders are responsible for the entire volunteer management process of recruitment, training, screening, placement, supervision, recognition, and evaluation.

Madison House cultivates and builds long term partnerships with over 70 agencies in the community, including public schools, child care centers, nursing homes and senior centers, community youth organizations, housing and environmental organizations, medical facilities, and local non-profit organizations. The clients that Madison House volunteers serve through these agencies are from every age range, economic status, gender, ethnic/racial background and sexual orientation. However, over 50 percent of our volunteer sites work with youth under the age of 18. Community agencies estimate that Madison House volunteers impact the lives of over 17,000 of their clients.
