Volunteers extend their services to the elderly by providing one-on-one companionship to senior citizens living in nursing homes, adult communities, and private residences.
This program collaborates with the Albemarle/Charlottesville SPCA, the Rivanna Trails Foundation and the Community Bikes Program. Volunteers serve as pet pals, work on local hiking trails and teaching children bike maintenance and safety.
The Athletics program enables students to coach teams through the Soccer Organization of Charlottesville/Albemarle (SOCA), the YMCA, McIntire Little League, First Tee of Charlottesville and the City of Charlottesville basketball program. Sports include soccer, basketball, lacrosse, golf, cheerleading, dance and gymnastics.
U.Va. students are matched with at-risk youth between the ages of 6 and 12. School guidance counselors identify these children and make referrals to Madison House. Group activities and special outings help to provide strong, positive role modeling and enhance the one-on-one relationship. This program registers volunteers in the spring.
Boosters volunteers serve in local classrooms as teacher's aids for kindergarten through 5th grade.
Bridging the Gap (BTG) is a service organization devoted to mentoring and tutoring refugee children resettled in the Charlottesville-Albemarle area.
Volunteers serve as role models assisting with instructional and recreational activities for children who attend child care centers.
Volunteers provide ESL tutoring to children and adults through Albemarle County Adult Education, Charlottesville High School and Charlottesville Adult Learning Center.
Volunteers provide callers with a confidential, empathetic non-judgmental listener with whom to discuss issues such as stress management, sexuality, suicide, domestic violence and sexual assault. HELP Line requires 40 hours of mandatory training.
This program matches impoverished families, referred by the Salvation Army, with community sponsors who provide the families with food and gift baskets.
Volunteers work with adults and children at a local homeless shelter and a drop-in center, and operate a food redistribution program called "Feed the Need."
Volunteers help rehabilitate homes for low-income families and renovate the buildings and grounds that serve the needs of local agencies.
Volunteers assist staff, patients and families at the U.Va. Medical Center, Martha Jefferson Hospital and the Charlottesville Free Clinic.
Volunteers travel to local migrant camps to organize recreational activities, teach or tutor adult migrant workers or children.
Volunteers are trained in a specialized skill that is used in outreach to the community or fellow UVA students. Unlike the other programs of Madison House, where volunteers are matched to a specific person or site for their volunteering, Outreach Services volunteer reach a wider audience through their sessions and trainings.
Volunteers will spend time with youth in a variety of afterschool settings, such as the Boys and Girls Club, the Field School, Blue Ridge Commons, and the Hope Center.
Volunteers work at several local agencies providing specialized rehabilitation and companionship services such as: Charlottesville Area Riding Therapy Program (CART), Therapeutic Adventures, Region Ten's Meadowcreek Center for mental retardation, Virginia Institute of Autism and The ARC of the Piedmont.
Volunteers establish one-to-one relationships with children needing supplemental instruction in basic academic skills within the public schools, as well as at Teen Sight, a program of FOCUS Women's Resource Center.
