What does it mean to be a sponsor?

Sponsors are any individuals, groups, or organizations that sign up to provide food and gifts for a family experiencing hardship this holiday season. Recipient families are referred to us by the Salvation Army. Sponsors choose what family size they would like to sponsor and whether they will be providing a monetary donation or shopping for the family themselves. Below, you will find a graphic showing the estimated cost of sponsoring various family sizes.

If a sponsor chooses to personally shop for the family, we will provide the names, ages, clothing sizes, and wish lists of each family member. The sponsor will then purchase the food and gift items for that family and then drop off the package at Madison House for distribution.

If a sponsor chooses to provide a monetary donation (by cash, check, or credit/debit card), then our volunteers will use the funds to purchase the necessary food and gift items.  

In both situations, your donation provides a complete food and gift package for an entire family for the holiday season!


  • Their family's names and ages
  • A suggested food and gift list
  • An inventory sheet
  • The package requirements, assembly information, and a due date for delivery to Madison House


Sponsor Recognition

Individuals or organizations who make major contributions to the Holiday Sharing program are eligible for Sponsor Recognition efforts.

Major contributions may include, but are not limited to,

  • Sponsoring a significant number of families
  • Sponsoring more than one exceptionally large family
  • Providing critical support to further the Holiday Sharing mission

For such sponsors, we offer the following:

  • Name/logo on program t-shirts
  • Free program t-shirts (number commensurate with contribution size)
  • Shout-out on Holiday Sharing Facebook page

Additionally, ALL sponsors will receive a handmade thank-you card and a candy cane.

When is the deadline to sign up?

The last day to sign up to become a sponsor is TBD.

Can I donate items to the family that are gently used?

The items donated to the family should be new; however, if there are other items that you would like to donate to your family, please bring them into Madison House in a separate bag or box.

Will extra food or gifts for our family be given to other families with less food/gifts?

Absolutely not! The package you create for your family will go directly to your family. No extra food or gifts will be removed.

Where do we bring our packages? when?

Please bring them directly to Madison House, where volunteers will assist you in bringing them in, along with collecting the inventory sheet and gift card, during the following days: November 27th, 28th, and 29th between 8:30 AM and 6:30 PM. Madison House is located at 170 Rugby Road, Charlottesville, VA 22903. Please note that we have a small parking lot adjacent to the building.

What grocery stores are we supposed to get gift cards from?

You may get a gift card from any grocery store you want, however, we recommend Food Lion or Kroger because the food is cheaper and your family will get the most from their gift card.

We did not know what to get for the adults so we just put a gift card, is that okay?

Yes, gift cards are okay for adults.
