Community Engaged Learning Faculty
About
Madison House recognizes the transformative potential of community-engaged learning as an integral part of the public service infrastructure for University of Virginia student volunteers. In support of our mission to spearhead ethical relationships and leverage our resources as vested members of the community, we have identified key ways we may be able to serve faculty and support faculty-led courses on community-engaged pedagogy. With support from the Jefferson Trust and the UVA Parents Fund, Madison House’s Community Engaged Learning Initiative is meant to provide flexible, functional resources to faculty and staff engaged in community-based academic inquiry. Madison House partners with faculty, staff, labs, and centers at the University of Virginia to enhance the community-facing experience for students and scholars alike.
As part of Madison House’s ongoing efforts, we have formalized many partnerships across grounds, including with the Civic and Community Engagement (CCE) initiative at the UVA Equity Center and with the Community-Engaged Teaching Scholars program at the Center for Teaching Excellence. Others have included individual faculty and staff who may not be associated with any specific program, yet are interested in pursuing an engaged lens to better serve our shared community interests.

Opportunities for Collaboration
Service Placements
Madison House can provide volunteer placements for students enrolled in your course by connecting you with one of our many programs or community partners.
Faculty may also want to connect with our programs and community partners to determine the possibilities for project-based community engagement opportunities.
Consultation
Consultation with Rose Cole, PhD, Madison House's Director of Community Engagement.
If Madison House is a good fit for your community-engaged learning course, a consultation can help determine how Madison House can help support your goals and your students' learning.
It is intended that partnerships include engagement with Madison House community partners.
Teaching Fellows
Assistance from Madison House Teaching Fellows
Faculty may nominate students, either graduate or undergraduate, to help support their course’s engagement practices over the course of an academic year. These students may provide additional support for volunteer tracking, planning, and engagement reflection.
Undergraduate Teaching Fellows will also participate in a cohort-based experience with their peers, culminating in a final portfolio developed in consultation with Madison House and their faculty member.
NOTE: These positions, while not a formalized “TA” position from the University, are stipend-based to support student leadership development.
