What is Madison House?

Madison House is the independent student volunteer center at the University of Virginia. For over 50 years, it has connected UVA students with meaningful service opportunities in the Charlottesville area. Each year, more than 1,500 student volunteers support local schools, hospitals, food pantries, animal rescues, and more.

One of Madison House’s longest-running programs is its free tax preparation service, which dates back to the 1970s. During tax season, volunteers assist individuals and families earning less than $70,000 annually at multiple locations around town, including Dairy Market, University Baptist Church, and the Thomas Jefferson Planning District Commission.

But what many people don’t realize is that Madison House offers tax services all year long—not just during tax season.

What year-round tax services do you offer?

Even after April 15, Madison House continues to support taxpayers with a variety of services:

  • Filing late returns for 2024 or any of the past five years

  • Amending returns if you made a mistake or forgot something

  • Printing copies of previously filed returns

  • Helping with electronic payments to the IRS or the Commonwealth of Virginia

  • Assisting with interpretation of IRS or state tax letters and guiding you on how to respond

And you don’t have to live in Charlottesville to qualify—residents from surrounding counties are welcome, too.

What to expect at your appointment

Madison House makes the tax filing process as smooth and stress-free as possible. Before your appointment, you’ll receive a checklist of documents to bring. Once you arrive, you’ll meet with an IRS-certified volunteer who will prepare and electronically file your return.

Every return is double-checked by a second certified reviewer to ensure accuracy. This two-step review process is part of the IRS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program standards and gives clients peace of mind.

Why this service matters

Filing taxes can be confusing and overwhelming. Madison House’s tax program not only helps area residents file accurately and on time, but also ensures they receive any refunds or credits for which they are eligible.

Beyond individual benefits, the program has a broader economic impact: it brings money back into the local economy and supports the financial health of the community.
