Student Community Engagement
I am a student. How can I get involved at Madison House?
We have many programs that are always in need of volunteers! For more information on how to volunteer with one of our programs, please visit our program overview page. Registration opens for all programs the first day of classes. Some programs also take volunteers throughout the year or in spring. You can see an overview for each of our programs here.
I want to volunteer, but can’t currently commit to a regular weekly shift. What options are there for me?
Many of our programs may accept volunteers on a shift-by-shift basis or accommodate more complicated schedules. You should consider reaching out to the Program Director of the program you’re interested in to see if you can work something out. Additionally, Madison House offers many one-time service events, which will be posted here.
I registered for a program, and haven't heard back yet. What should I do?
Thank you for your interest in volunteering! Programs take time to organize. Please wait three weeks and then reach out to the Head Program Director or Program Director of the program you have registered for. Their contact information can be found here.
I would like to meet with someone to talk about volunteering. How can I do that?
Call (434) 977-7051 or email info@madisonhouse.org. Our capable student staff are happy to help you review your options and find the program that best suits you.
I want to get involved with Creating Assets, Savings, and Hope (CASH) and/or Medical Services. How can I do that?
CASH and Medical Services are among Madison House’s most popular volunteer programs. As a result, registration for CASH and Medical Services only open in the fall due to the limited slots available at the community partner site. Registration opens the first day of classes; keep an eye on our website and social media and register once it opens! In the meantime, you can consider volunteering with one of other programs, such as our Recreational Therapy or Adopt-a-Grandparent!
Can I still join Medical Services (after Signup Sunday)?
While our process for clinical placements has concluded for the year, our Medical Services track also has opportunities in public health. You can contact Ketlin Smith about those opportunities from the Medical Services GivePulse page.
You may also be interested in joining the Adopt-a-Grandparent, HELP Line, or Recreational Therapy programs.
When do applications for Head Program Director and Program Director open?
Our leadership applications open near the end of the Fall Semester every year. Students can begin applying at the start of December, and the Leadership applications will close in early February.
I would like to support Madison House as an Intern or Fellow. How do I apply to do so?
Madison House offers Internships for undergraduate students and fellowships for graduate students both during the academic year and during the summer. More information about these roles can be found on our Student Leadership Opportunities page.
I am a University of Virginia alumni. How can I stay involved with Madison House?
Madison House has a Newsletter for those who want to stay up-to-date on all things Madison House. Sign up here! Madison House alumni can also join the The Virginia Alumni Mentoring (VAM) Madison House community here.
Community Partners
I am a community member looking for a tutor for my student. What is the process?
Our volunteer programs work with community partner sites and not with individual members of the community. However, we partner with many schools and non-profits with after school programs in the Charlottesville area. If your child’s school or after school program is a Madison House partner, you can connect with them directly about possibly getting your child support through us.
How do I partner with Madison House and get University of Virginia students to volunteer with my organization?
Our Community Partnership application window is open twice annually, in June and October. If interested in becoming a partner, please complete our inquiry form. More information on how to become a Community Partner can be found on our community partnership overview page.
Does Madison House provide students with training and perform background checks before they volunteer, or am I responsible for that?
Our Education and Youth serving volunteers receive a general training focused on best practices around working with children and youth. Each student volunteer also undergoes a background check.
